Taylor Swift and Selena Gomez have been close friends for years. The pair has supported each other through countless highs and lows, romantic and otherwise.
Who could forget Swift’s infamous reaction to Gomez’s iconic performance of “The Heart Wants What It Wants” at the 2014 AMAs? Or Selena’s public fangirling and the friends’ lovefest over Taylor Swift’s single “Lover?”
Most recently, Swift spoke up in support of Gomez’s bombshell new single “Lose Me to Love You.” The song is believed to be a final goodbye to Justin Bieber after Gomez’s long-term rocky relationship with the singer.
Gomez’s new single is believed to serve as a last goodbye to Jelena
Jelena breathed its (probably) last breath in early 2018, when Bieber and Gomez finally broke it off in March after years of an on-and-off relationship.
Hailey Baldwin, who had also dated Bieber several times previously, began dating the famous crooner exclusively shortly thereafter. The couple was engaged over the summer and has since had two weddings: a courthouse ceremony in September 2018 and a formal wedding in South Carolina last month.
Gomez has been fairly open with the press about the heartbreak her A-list relationship has caused her. Fans believe her new single and accompanying black-and-white iPhone-shot music video, “Lose You To Love Me,” chronicle the end of Jelena and Gomez’s decision to move on.
On Oct. 23, shortly after midnight, Gomez released the video, writing on Twitter, “Thank you all for standing by my side through the highs and lows. I couldn’t do it without you all and I can’t wait to start my next adventure with you. Lose You To Love Me is out now.”
‘Lose You to Love Me’ lyrics are heartbreaking and poignant
On Vevo, Gomez wrote of her new single, “This song was inspired by many things that have happened in my life since releasing my last album. I want people to feel hope and to know you will come out the other side stronger and a better version of yourself.”
“Lose You to Love Me” paints a picture of broken promises and Gomez’s frustration over what her ex swore he’d give her. “You promised the world and I fell for it/I put you first and you adored it/Set fires to my forest/And you let it burn,” the song begins.
Later, Gomez appears to reference Baldwin’s and Bieber’s relationship directly when she sings, “I gave my all and they all know it/You turned me down and now it’s showing/In two months, you replaced us/Like it was easy.”
The central message of the song? Self-love. Gomez sings that she had to “lose” her ex in order to find, and love, herself.
Swift voiced her support for her bestie in an Instagram post
Swift has never been shy about voicing her support for Gomez’s work. In fact, she was one of the first to hear Gomez’s 2014 single about Bieber, “The Heart Wants What it Wants.” Gomez said her close friend listened to it “three times” immediately.
Apparently, Swift was in the early listening party for this song, too. Shortly after Gomez shared her new single, Swift took to her Instagram stories to speak out about how much she adored it.
“This song is a perfect expression of healing & my absolute favorite song she’s put out yet. A triumph,” Swift wrote in the post.
She added, “I love you so much @selenagomez.”
