While you bozos passed quarantine time with “Tiger King” and “The Last Dance,” John Mulaney was glued to Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s daily COVID-19 briefings.
“I watched a series that I absolutely loved, it was an hour-long drama he called ‘the daily press conferences of Governor Andrew Cuomo,'” Mulaney joked during the opening monologue of TV’s “SNL” on Saturday.
“It told the story of an Italian American father who, after being an empty nester finds himself quarantining with his two daughters,” he said. “Hijinks ensue.”
The 38-year-old comedian said he “loved” Cuomo’s press conferences, while ribbing the third-term Democrat for being “a little too excited” for the briefings, which the governor held for 111 consecutive days during the height of the pandemic in New York.
“He’d get out there and he’d start his rhythm, you know, he’d be like, ‘We are New York, and we are New York tough. And we are New York tough because we are New York strong. And we are New York strong because we are New York kind,” Mulaney riffed, imitating Cuomo’s distinct staccato speech patterns.
Mulaney called the divorce governor’s infamous digressions into his family life “brilliant” — then imagined an argument between Cuomo and his “brother’s wife” over whether the governor’s elderly mother can see her grandkids.
“She says, ‘Well it’s important for the kids to see that Grandma,'” Mulaney said, mimicking Cuomo.
“I go, ‘You gavone, b—-. If you bring your kids even into the mud room of my mother’s house, I will break your neck and bury you in the Rockaways.”
“I am worried that when the coronavirus is over that Cuomo won’t realize that his show is over,” Mulany joked.
“I’m scared he’ll take it on the road and try to play stadiums and come out and be like, ‘Hey, who wants to hear about my daughter’s boyfriend,’ and everyone’s like ‘play COVID!'”
